The criticism by Imām Ahmad ibn Hanbal against Abū Hanīfah

Al-Husayn ibn Al-Hasan Al-Marwazī said: Abū Hanīfah was mentioned in the presence of Ahmad ibn Hanbal, so he said: “His opinion is blameworthy (madhmūm) and his person is not to be mentioned.” (Jarh wa Ta’dīl 8/450. Authenticated by Sh. Muqbil)

2)

ʿAbdullāh ibn Muhammad Al-Marwazī narrated to us saying: I heard Al-Husayn ibn Al-Hasan Al-Marwazī saying: “I asked Ahmad ibn Hanbal saying: ‘What do you say about Abū Hanīfah?’ He said: ‘His opinion is blameworthy (madhmūm) and his hadīth should not be mentioned.’” (al-‘Uqaylī 4/285. Authenticated by Sh. Muqbil)

3)

ʿAbdullāh ibn Ahmad narrated to us saying: I heard my father saying: “Abū Hanīfah’s hadīth is weak (daʿīf) and his opinion is weak (daʿīf).” (al-‘Uqaylī 4/285. Authenticated by Sh. Muqbil)

4)

My father narrated to me [saying]: Shuʿayb ibn Harb narrated to us saying: I heard Sufyān Al-Thawrī saying: “I do not love to agree with them even upon the truth.” ʿAbdullāh said: I said to my father, may Allāh have mercy on him, “Does he mean Abū Hanīfah?” He said: “Yes, a man who was asked to repent in Islām twice – meaning Abū Hanīfah.” I said to my father: Was Abū Hanīfah the one who was asked to repent?” He said: “Yes.”

Then ʿAbdullāh said: I heard my father, may Allāh have mercy on him, saying: “I believe he was asked to repent regarding this verse:

Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they attribute to Him (al-Saffāt:180)’

Abū Hanīfah said: ‘This is created (makhlūq),’ so they said to him: ‘This (statement) is disbelief (kufr)’ and they asked him to repent.” (al-Sunnah 1/192. Authenticated by Sh. Muqbil and al-Riyāshī)

5)

… Al-Marwadhī Abū Bakr Ahmad ibn Al-Hajjāj told us: I asked Abū ʿAbdullāh – who is Ahmad ibn Hanbal – about Abū Hanīfah and Amr ibn Ubayd, and he said: “Abū Hanīfah is more severe (i.e. worse, more harmful) for the Muslims than Amr ibn Ubayd because he has followers.” (al-Khatīb 13/437. Authenticated by Sh. Muqbil)

[T.N: Amr Ibn Ubayd: He was one of the leaders and scholars of the Mu’tazilah and Qadariyyā (those who deny Qadr), a caller to bid’ah (innovation). He would speak ill of the companions of the prophet (ﷺ). He was also a liar who would fabricate hadīths – see al-Siyar 6/105, Bidāyah wa Nihāyah of Ibn Kathīr 13/341, al-Taqrīb of ibn Hajr #5704, Jarh wa Ta’dīl 6/246, al-Duafā 3/1284]

6)

… Abū Bakr Al-Athram told us, saying: Abū ʿAbdullāh informed us regarding a topic concerning Al-Aqīqah [birth sacrifice], in which there were hadīth with connected chains of transmission from the authority of the prophet (ﷺ), his companions and the tābi’īn (followers). Then he said: and Abū Hanīfah said: ‘it (i.e. Aqīqah) is from the practises of jahilīyah (pre-Islamic ignorance)’, and he smiled as one who was astonished. (al-Khatīb 13/438. Authenticated by Sh. Muqbil)

7)

… Al-Athram told us saying: I saw Abū ʿAbdullāh (i.e. Imām Ahmad) repeatedly criticising Abū Hanīfah and his madhab, and he would relate something from his statements with rejection and astonishment.(al-Khatīb 13/438. Authenticated by Sh. Muqbil)

8)

Imām Ahmad said in the narration of Ibrāhīm ibn Hānī: “Abandon the opinion of Abū Hanīfah and his companions.” (Bahr Al-Dam #1071)

9)

Imām Ahmad said in the narration of ‘Amr ibn Ma’mar: “When you see a man avoiding/staying away (from) Abū Hanīfah and looking into (i.e. examining) his views, and not feeling at ease with him, nor with those who follow his madhab among the extremists, and not taking him as an imām, then I hope good for him.” (Bahr Al-Dam #1071)

10) Al-Khalīlī said: Muhammad ibn Yūsuf al-Bīkandī (is)
Trustworthy and reliable [thiqah], agreed upon [by the scholars]….Muhammad ibn Yūsuf al-Bīkandī narrated: “I was with Ahmad ibn Hanbal when the statement of Abū Hanīfah was mentioned to him: “Divorce before marriage.”

So he [Ahmad] said: “Miskīn (poor/unfortunate) Abū Hanīfah! It is as if he was not from Irāq [one of the centres of hadīth and knowledge], as if he knew nothing of knowledge. Indeed, there has come regarding it [evidence] from the Prophet (ﷺ), and from the Companions, and from over twenty of the Tābi’ūn such as: Sa’īd ibn Jubayr, Sa’īd ibn al-Musayyab, ‘Atā’, Tāwūs, and ‘Ikrimah. How does he dare to say: ‘She is divorced’?” (Irshād Fī Ma’rifah al-Hadīth pg. 464-465 and Mawsū Aqwāl of Imām Ahmad 4/20)

11)

Abdullāh ibn Ahmad narrated: “I asked my father, may Allāh have mercy on him, about a man who wants to ask about something from the matters of his religion that he is tested with regarding faith, concerning divorce and other matters, in the presence of a group of people from the people of opinion and from the people of hadīth who do not memorise nor know the weak-chained hadīth from the strong-chained hadīth – should he ask the people of opinion or the people of hadīth despite their limited knowledge?” He said: “He should ask the people of hadīth and not ask the people of opinion. The weak hadīth is better than the opinion of Abū Hanīfah.” (al-Sunnah 1/180. Authenticated by Sh. Muqbil and al-Riyāshī)

11b)

Abdullāh ibn Ahmad said: “I asked my father about Asad ibn ‘Amr?” He said: “He was truthful (sadūq), and Abū Yūsuf is truthful — but it is not fitting that anything be narrated from the companions of Abū Hanīfah.” (al-‘Ilal 3/300)

11c)

Ibn Hāni’ said: he [i.e., Abū ʿAbdillāh, Ahmad] was asked about Abū Hanīfah — is he narrated from? He said: “No.”( Su’ālāt Ibn Hāni’, no. 2368)

11d)

Ziyād ibn Ayyūb said: I asked Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal about narrating from Abū Hanīfah and Abū Yūsuf. He said: “I do not view narrating from either of them [as permissible].” (al-Majrūhīn, Ibn Hibbān 3/71)

11e)

Hanbal ibn Ishāq said: I heard my paternal uncle — meaning Ahmad ibn Hanbal — say: “Yaʿqūb Abū Yūsuf was fair in hadīth; but as for Abū Hanīfah and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan, they both opposed the [Prophetic] transmitted reports (al-athar), and these two hold an evil opinion (ra’ī sū’)” — meaning Abū Hanīfah and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan. (Tārīkh Baghdād 2/570)

12)

ʿAbdullāh said: Muhannā ibn Yahyā Al-Shāmī narrated to me: I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal, may Allāh be pleased with him, saying: “In my view, the statement of Abū Hanīfah and dung, is the same.“ (al-Sunnah 1/180. Authenticated by Sh. Muqbil and al-Riyāshī)

13)

Ishāq ibn Mansūr al-Kawsaj — who said: I said to Ahmad ibn Hanbal: ‘Is a man rewarded for hatred of Abū Hanīfah and his companions?‘ He said: ‘Yes, by Allāh.’” (al-Sunnah 1/210. Masāʾil of al-Kawsaj 3/3379. Authenticated by al-Riyāshī)

14)

Imām Ahmad (may Allāh have mercy on him) said: “The people of ra’ī are innovators, misguided, enemies of the Sunnah and the [Prophetic] narrations. They nullify hadīth and reject the Messenger (ﷺ). They take Abū Hanīfah, and whoever holds his view, as an Imām, and adopt his religion as their own religion. And what misguidance is plainer than one who says this — abandoning the words of the Messenger (ﷺ) and his Companions, and following the words of Abū Hanīfah and his companions instead? This alone suffices as ruinous error and transgression.” (Tabaqāt al-Hanābilah 1/35)

15)

Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Tirmidhī said: I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal say: “Abū Hanīfah lies.” (al-Duʿafā’ al-Kabīr, al-ʿUqaylī, # 1876. Tārīkh of al-Khatīb 15/579 – Isnād authenticated by Dr. Bashhār)

16)

Muhammad ibn Rawh said: I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal say: “If a man took up the judgeship and then ruled according to Abū Hanīfah’s opinion (ra’ī), and I were then asked about it, I would hold that his rulings should be overturned.” (Tārīkh Baghdād 13/412. Isnād authenticated by Dr. Bashhār in his checking)

17)

Ibrāhīm al-Harbī said: “Abū Hanīfah put forth things in [religious] knowledge — chewing water would be better than them. One day I presented some of his legal questions to Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and he began to marvel at them, then said: ‘It is as though he is inventing Islām from scratch.’” (Tārīkh Baghdād 13/413. Ibn Battah – one of the narrators has weakness but was partially corroborated by others)
