1) Narration of Abū Hurayrah
Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said:
“A sūrah from the Qurʾān of thirty verses intercedes for its companion until he is forgiven: {Tabāraka alladhī bi-yadihi al-mulk} [al-Mulk: 1].”
(Abū Dawūd #1400 – Declared Hasan by Yāsir Fathī in his checking 16/486. Authenticated by al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mulaqqin, al-Bayhaqī and others)
2) Narration(s) of Ibn Mas’ūd
A) Ibn Mas’ūd narrated:
“The man is approached in his grave from the direction of his feet, and his feet say: ‘You have no way over what lies with me; he used to stand upon me with Sūrat al-Mulk.’ He said: Then his belly is approached, and his belly says: ‘You have no way over what lies with me; he preserved Sūrat al-Mulk within me.’ He said: Then his head is approached, and his tongue says: ‘You have no way over what lies with me; he used to stand with me [in recitation] with Sūrat al-Mulk.’
Then ʿAbd Allāh said: It is the preventer (al-māni’ah), by Allāh’s leave, from the punishment of the grave; and in the Torah it is Sūrat al-Mulk, whoever recites it in a night has done much and well.”
(Authenticated by Yāsir Fathī saying: “I say: This is mawqūf [statement of a companion] upon Ibn Masʿūd with a good isnād, all of whose men are thiqāt, except for some criticism concerning ʿĀsim; and the like of it is not said by [personal] opinion [Meaning, this narration takes the ruling of marfū – being raised to the Prophet (ﷺ)], so it is a strong witness [shāhid] for the hadīth of Abū Hurayrah.
The point of witness in it is “It is the preventer; it prevents its companion from the punishment of the grave,” while the rest of the hadīth indicates that it disputes on behalf of its companion and intercedes for him until he is forgiven, and Allāh knows best.” 16/492-493)
B) ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mas’ūd, who said:
“Sūrat Tabārak disputed on behalf of its companion until it admitted him into Paradise.” (Yāsir Fathī said: “It is mawqūf upon Ibn Masʿūd with a hasan gharīb isnād, and it has the ruling of a raised report [to the Prophet (ﷺ)].” 16/494)
C) ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mas’ūd, who said:
“A man died, and he was approached from the sides of his grave, and a sūrah from the Qurʾān began disputing on his behalf until it shielded him [lit. prevented him]. He [the narrator – Murrah] said: So Masrūq and I looked, and behold, it was Sūrat al-Mulk.” (Yāsir Fathī said: “And this is mawqūf upon Ibn Masʿūd with an isnād on the condition of the two Shaykhs [i.e. Bukhārī and Muslim], and it has the ruling of a raised report.” 18/496)
D) ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:
“When the dead person dies, fires are kindled around him, and each fire consumes what is next to it, unless he has a deed that comes between him and it. And a man died who did not recite anything from the Qurʾān except a sūrah of thirty verses. So it came to him from the direction of his head and said: “He used to recite me.” Then it came to him from the direction of his feet and said: “He used to stand [in prayer] with me.” Then it came to him from the direction of his belly and said: “He had preserved me.” He said: So it saved him. He [the narrator – Murrah] said: Then Masrūq and I looked in the mushaf, and we did not find a sūrah of thirty verses except Tabārak. (Yāsir Fathī said: “And this is mawqūf upon Ibn Masʿūd with a good isnād, and it has the ruling of a raised report.” 18/496)
3) Narration of Anas (رضي الله عنه)
Anas ibn Mālik, who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said:
“A sūrah from the Qurʾān — it is only thirty verses — disputed on behalf of its companion until it admitted him into Paradise, and it is Sūrat Tabārak.” (Yāsir Fathī said: “it is a hasan gharīb isnād, and a strong witness [shāhid] for the hadīth of Abū Hurayrah in meaning.” 16/496-497)
4) Narration of Jābir (رضي الله عنه)
Abū Khaythamah Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; he said: I said to Abū al-Zubayr: Did you hear Jābir mention: that the Prophet (ﷺ) would not sleep until he recited “Alif Lām Mīm, Tanzīl al-Sajdah” [al-Sajdah] and “Tabārak alladhī biyadihi al-mulk”[al-Mulk]? So Abū al-Zubayr said: Safwān, or Abū Safwān, narrated it to me. (al-Hākim #3586 who declared it Sahīh. Declared Sahīh by Mahmūd Mīrah in his checking 9/488 saying: “A Sahīh hadīth by al-Hākim’s isnād here. In it is Safwān, or Abū Safwān, who is the intermediary between Abū al-Zubayr, Muhammad ibn Muslim ibn Tadrus, and Jābir, may Allāh be pleased with him. And he is Safwān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Safwān al-Qurashī al-Makkī. And he is trustworthy [thiqah], and its isnād becomes Sahīh.”)
